Choosing the right gym flooring comes down to a lot more than just the color of the half court lines. For many gyms, the decision between wood and synthetic flooring is a tough one. If you have a multi-purpose area, synthetic floors might be the right option for you.
Synthetic floors typically come in 3 different forms: pad and pour polyurethane, rubber, and vinyl, all of which offer customization of style and comfort. The pad and pour is one of the most common, and is a great choice for elementary schools and middle schools, who typically utilize gyms less for intense athletic training and more as multi-use areas.
Pad and pour floors are fairly easy to clean. Unlike wood floors, which require annual maintenance in order to maintain the finish, synthetic floors can withstand every day wear and tear, and be scrubbed down at the end of the day with an auto scrubber. This is especially helpful in a multi-use space. Elementary and middle schools that use physical education spaces for other purposes- such as a lunch room, an auditorium, a meeting hall- benefit greatly from the ease of maintenance that comes from synthetic floors. Because they’re seamless, the pad and pour polyurethane floors can easily be mopped up after lunch, and then transition into a space for a physical education class.
Pad and pour synthetic floors provide the same slide characteristics as a wood gym floor. Synthetic floors also offer great shock absorption and bounce—perfect for children running around.
One of the best things about pad and pour synthetic floors is their lifespan. Because a typical pad and pour is a thin layer of polyurethane over a rubber subfloor, refinishing is as simple as sanding down the polyurethane and pouring another layer. Your pad and pour synthetic floor will last you as long as your building does, requiring a refinishing about once every 15-20 years.
