Explosion Proof (EP) Fume Hoods, or Combustible Hood Enclosures as they are sometimes called, are not designed literally as “explosion proof”. Explosion proof is a relative term and nothing is completely explosion proof. Explosion proof fume hoods are not designed to contain an explosion. Rather, they are designed to eliminate igniting spark potential of fume hood components by using rated explosion proof components like light fixtures, switches, receptacles, motors and wiring on the fume hood. These components are supplied and installed by a licensed electrician to follow all national, state and local codes.
Facility spaces that have volatile, flammable or combustible atmospheric conditions present should utilize fume hoods with explosion proof components installed by a certified electrician according to code. Facilities or rooms classified by the NEC or NFPA as flammable or combustible should utilize modified fume hoods regardless of the type of experimentation taking place inside the fume hood.
Contact a licensed engineer, design professional or a licensed electrician for code compliance and explosion proof applications in your laboratory. We can provide to you and these professionals assistance with the selection of the proper fume hood for these conditions. Contact one of our fume hood specialists.
