STEAM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Basically, STEM + Art.
Children who study STEAM education develop many skills that are vital for success in today’s workforce, including innovation, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and entrepreneurship. Art plays a crucial role in helping children gain these skills.
Technology education products are often involved in the art process. The different machines that are a part of the umbrella of “tech ed” are applicable for nearly any type of class. These machines encourage engagement and promote learning through doing.
For example, bringing a 3D printer into the classroom allows students to utilize all 5 of the letters in STEAM education, from engineering to art. 3D printing is used for a wide variety of applications, but it all has the same goal: to make something. Some examples of prototypes created through 3D printing in the classroom include prosthetic hands, Rube Goldberg machines, and dinosaur bones. The possibilities are endless.
Art isn’t just the traditional art class where kids make sculptures and paint. The term “art” often encompasses all of the humanities. For example, a history class can benefit from a 3D printing recreation of a printing press. A language arts class can print material on a vinyl printer. With software that doesn’t require as much coding, students without experience can easily learn how to begin creating.
Art can also be taken to mean design. Design is a large part of creating anything using technology education equipment. 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and laser cutters/engravers all focus on creating, and to create, you need a design.
3D scanning is also beneficial in art classes. For some students, it offers the similar benefits to creating molds, while being less time consuming. It also allows artists to replicate their productions and pieces organically by more traditional means of creation.
