1998, Jack and Dorothy Homme founded the Homme Foundation Education Fund with the hope of sending the children and grandchildren of H2I Group employees to college.
Jack joined the Minneapolis, Minnesota based Haldeman Langford in 1946, following his World War II Marine service. Jack became an officer and owner of the business over the succeeding years because of his compassion for people and passion for building the business. Throughout his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of a small manufacturing company to a national sales and service company with multiple subsidiaries.
One of Jack’s greatest accomplishments was the Employee Stock Ownership Plan. The company began a profit-sharing program in 1957 that endeavored to share financial success with all employees. By the 1970s, it was converted to an employee stock ownership plan, and eventually the company became 100% employee owned in 1987, which was always Jack’s ultimate goal. He said, “This company belongs to its employees.”
After his retirement as CEO, Jack and his wife Dorothy wanted to honor employees by helping their children attend college. “For some time, Dorothy and I have wanted to do something that would reflect the joy and pleasure we have had these past fifty-two years here. Our association with the company and you have been among the brightest memories in our lifetime.”
The Foundation was spurred by Dorothy’s lifelong love of children, and her desire to support their education. Throughout her life, Dorothy was known for her volunteer work with many children’s organizations. The creation of the Homme Education Foundation demonstrated the warmth and companionship Jack and Dorothy felt with the employees of the company.
“Our employees are sincere, hardworking, and forthright. They really have ‘built’ this company, and this is my wife’s and my way to do something to memorialize their efforts. This seemed like the right thing to do, and in the long run, it is something which will benefit us all,” said Jack in 1999.
And benefit it has. To date, the Foundation has gifted over $782,850 in scholarships to hundreds of children and grandchildren of current and past employees.
Jack and Dorothy have both passed, but their legacy lives on. In April of 2020, the Homme Foundation Education Fund will again accept applications for scholarships. The scholarship program is for the children of employees who will be enrolled in a full time, undergraduate 2 -4-year college program in the Fall. Students must be unmarried, not more than 25 years of age, and maintain a 2.0 grade point average. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $10,000 per year, depending on financial need. Scholarship America manages the program, processes the applications, and determines eligibility and the amount of the scholarships. No H2I employees are involved in the scholarship decisions made by Scholarship America. Applications for the 2020-21 school year are due April 30, 2020.
Children of employees are encouraged to apply for this generous gift that will make a positive, lifelong impact on the lives of students and the employees of H2I Group. The employee owners of H2I Group will always remember the vision and compassion of Jack and Dorothy Homme.
